Winston R. (Bill) McCall of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina and Avon Park,
Florida passed away on November 16, 2012. He was the sixth generation of
the Samuel and Eleanor McCall family who settled in the area of The Blue
Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1803 that would later become
Transylvania County.
Mr. McCall was the last surviving son of Zebulon R. McCall and Lazona
L, Ray. He was born on January 18, 1927. His early pioneer family has been
traced back to Grandparents, Enos S. McCall and Sarah Jane Wood McCall.
His Great Grand Father was Samuel C. McCall, who enlisted in the Union
Army at Knoxville to fight with Kirk's Raiders. The main focus of Kirk's
Raiders was to keep the railroad at Asheville from falling to Confederate
Forces. His Great Grandmother was Martha A. Lanning McCall, Samuel C.
and Martha McCall was buried near Enos and Sarah at the Balsam Grove
Baptist Church Cemetery in Balsam Grove, North Carolina. His Great Great
Grandparents were Robert and Rachel Glazener McCall who are buried in
McCall Cemetery, west of the fish hatchery in the Pisgah Forest National
Forest. His Great Great Great Grandparents were Samuel and Eleanor
McCall who came from the coastal area of North Carolina west to Chapel
Hill, then to the Transylvania area in 1803. The McCall family is listed in
the first census of 1798 as wagon makers who helped the Revolutionary War
Cause against England.
As a young boy Winston dreamed of flying airplanes. His early years
were in the U.S.Navy and then being hired by United Air Lines in 1948.
During his 38 years with United Air Lines, he flew every plane that United
had in their fleet from the DC-3 on through the 747 as Captain. He flew
troops to the Korean War and into Vietnam when United were contracted by
the military. His favorite route was the Pacific flight to Hawaii and Japan.
Through his years with United Air Lines, he often said, that he probably
made that trip 4000 times, many of those trips before modem navigation
systems as the GPS.
His skill of flying was passed on to many students, friends also members
of the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed boating, fishing and owned several
airplanes that he flew across America with his wife after he retired. He and
his wife loved to motor home along with a motor cycle on the back, they
spent one year going around America and Canada to most Nationals Parks
and Monuments. They also had many pleasant cruises out of foreign ports.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Ann McCall. A son Robert Patrick
McCall of Goose Creek, SC. A daughter Linda Lorscheider and husband
Larry Lorscheider, of Enterprise, OR. Grandson William R. McCall and
wife Michelle of Moncks Comer, SC, Grandson Mark Morton and wife
Michelle, Grandson Stephen Morton from the Lexington KY area.
Granddaughter Tami Sue McCall of North Platte, NE. A step son Douglas
Benton and wife Tiffany of San Jose, CA also step daughter Karen Bradbury
and husband Scott of Greenville, SC. He has 8 Great grandchildren and 3
Great Great Grandchildren. His Nephews Tony McCall and wife Barbara of
Nashville,TN also Nephew Gene McCall and wife Mickie of Fairview, NC
were also interested in the family genealogy and helped him compile the
McCall history with information from family bibles and records.
Winston wrote his autobiography and members of his family and friends
appreciate reading the entertaining and exciting life adventures lived by this
fine gentleman.

28712. The family wishes to thank the Hospice staff and Registered Nurses
for their ongoing dedication to patients that are cared for at home
Mr. McCall has his headstone located next to his Grandfather and
Grandmother, Eons and Sarah Jane Wood McCall at the Balsam Grove
Cemetery in Balsam Grove, NC. A private family memorial of his life will
be held at a future time when members of his family can convene.
