James Harvey “Buddy” Young


Buddy Young passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2012 of heart failure. It was a perfect day for him to join our Lord. Dad couldn’t have planned it any better himself. All his family and friends were already together celebrating mom and dad’s 50th anniversary with lots of love and laughter. Thirty minutes later, the Lord called him home. He was the patriarch of this family and a spectacular father. We have been dearly blessed. His arms were always open and his love flowing.
A native of Raleigh, NC, he was the son of the late Burley Franklin Young, Jr. and Lucy Caroline Scott Young. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Randy Cope.
Mr. Young was a veteran of the U. S. Army and the U. S. Army National Guard, and was a former member of the Rotary. He and his wife were the owners/operators of the Red Lion Inn for 33 years. Mr. Young was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Brevard Branch where he served as a High Priest.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Joyce Gray Young; daughters, Charlene Humphries of Bryson City and Darlene Cope and husband Scott of Penrose; sons, Buddy G. Young and wife Lisa of Raleigh, and Rick Gray and wife Ingrid of Bellevue. NE; brothers, Billy Young, and Earl Young and wife Lynn all of Raleigh, and Don Young and wife Peggy of Portland, OR; 16 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with President Kenneth Duke officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with military graveside rites conducted by the Honor Guard for Veterans of Transylvania County.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Tuesday at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home.
