Obituary for James Owen

LAKE TOXAWAY - James “Jim” Edward Owen, 64, passed away August 7, 2014.
A native of Transylvania County, he was born in the family home to the late Vincent Corbin Owen and Elizabeth Lee Owen.

Jim was a retired home builder who also worked several years for E.I. DuPont. He was a Vietnam Era United States Navy veteran. He served with honor as an Aviation Electronics Technician. Duty stations included San Diego, CA, Nashville, TN, Pensacola Naval Air Station, FL as well as US Navy aircraft carrier deployment. He was a 1968 graduate of Tamassee-Salem High School.

Jim, a talented carpenter, was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and a skilled hunter who also enjoyed photographing local wildlife. Jim was an officer with the Tuckasegee Beagle Club of Ellenboro, NC where he judged annual field trial events. He raised several breeds of champion hunting dogs and his excellent reputation as a breeder/ trainer was known throughout North Carolina and other southeastern states.

Jim, the youngest of eight brothers and sisters, loved his family and the mountains where he was raised.
He is survived by one son, James Cody Owen, of Pisgah Forest; three brothers: Jack Owen and wife Marjorie of Lake Toxaway, Jerry Owen and wife Brenda of Brevard and Joe Owen and wife Gaynelle of Lake Toxaway; four sisters: Jean Crotts and husband Ralph of Shelby, NC, Joanne Galloway and husband Fred of Brevard, Jonnie Fordyce of Lake Toxaway, Jeanette Owen of Lake Toxaway, multiple nephews and nieces and his beloved canine companion “Buddy.”

A private memorial service is planned.
