It was June of 1988, I had just finished my sophomore and, as it turned out, final year at Rosman High School. I would be moving the coming August and leaving my small town 1A school behind. As my friends were leaving with plans of heading to the beach or lake that afternoon, I was sitting on the front steps of the school waiting for Jerry to come get me and Cameron. We were headed up 215 to meet Alvin at a campsite that afternoon for a few days of camping and flyfishing on North Fork. Jerry had stepped into a role, unasked by anyone, in my young life that I will never forget and always cherish. He had taken on a role of an adopted uncle as my dad's illness had grown worse and eventually took his life. Many are my memories, of hiking through the mountains of Standing Indian or Turkey Pen behind Jerry and his Britany Spaniels hunting grouse, or the miles of mountian rivers he shared with me as he and Alvin taught me the art of fishing with the fly. North Fork, West Fork, Big and Little Snowbird, rivers that I still see in memory and can't remember the names of, or sadly, how to return to. Days in camps along side of rivers with many other folks that I can still call friend. As it would turn out, the hands of time would turn, and the short few days along North Fork in 1988 would be the last trip I would spend with Jerry and Cameron. However, thanks to a man with a heart as big as these mountains, that stepped in to the role of an adopted uncle, I have memories that will flow as long and run as deep as the many mountain rivers, that Jerry Powell unselfishly shared with me.
