Obituary for Marjorie Duquette Shepherd (Duquette)

Marjorie Duquette Shepherd (Duquette)
Lake Toxaway - Marjorie Duquette Shepherd, 87, born in Port Washington, NY and a longtime resident of Lake Toxaway, NC, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Gaylord Oscar Shepherd Jr., son Scott and his wife Betsy of Lawrenceville, GA, daughter Beth and her husband John Hines of Beaufort, SC, son Don Shepherd of Lake Toxaway, daughter Ann and her husband Dennis Hertzberg of Lake Toxaway, son Matthew and his wife Carolyn of Decatur, GA, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Marge was predeceased by her eldest son Gaylord Oscar Shepherd III.

Marge attended James Madison College in Virginia. She began her work experience in the advertising department of Carter’s clothing. She and Gaylord married in Rhode Island before moving to New Jersey and later to Transylvania County.

She was a member of the Transylvania County Handcrafters’ Guild and the High Hills Garden Club and enjoyed knitting, jewelry making and gardening. She was an officer of the Rainbow Girls in Needham, Mass and a Girl Scout leader in New Jersey and Transylvania County.
She operated Bay-Horse Farm riding stables from her home with local lessons and also began the first local horseback riding programs for the Girl Scouts and YMCA Camp Greenville, along with a riding program for special needs children.

Marge loved all animals from horses, raising golden retrievers to chickens and believed in their positive influence on children. She incorporated this into the basic philosophy of Camp Winding Gap, the children’s summer camp that she and her husband founded in 1978. Along with the camp farm program, Marge was involved in the creation and implementation of all
aspects of the camp. Her legacy extends beyond her own six children to the countless loving relationships she developed with campers and staff throughout the years.

A private family ceremony will be followed by an open house for friends to visit with the family at her home on Saturday June 4, from 1 to 4pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Shriners Hospitals for Children.
