Obituary for Robert Thomas "Bob" Barrett

Robert Thomas "Bob" Barrett
Robert Thomas Barrett, 90, died February 29, 2016 at home in Pisgah Forest, NC.. He leaves his wife Greta, daughters Judith (DeRyke) and Ruth (Barrett-Rendler), brother David, grandchildren Mitchell, Jeffrey, Elizabeth, Ruth and Virginia, 3 great-grand children, and myriad nieces, nephews and friends.

Bob is preceded in death by son Bruce and daughter Joyce.

Born June 27, 1925 in Rogers City, Michigan to Paul and Thelma (Stephens), Bob served in the Navy, and attended Michigan State University to become a teacher. His subsequent career as a journalist served as a launchpad for his many talents. When he became interested in something he took the time to learn, practice and become proficient. During the latter half of his life, and for the last 20 years in partnership with his best friend and loving wife Greta, he painted, wrote and published novels, learned Spanish, intimidated local sharks with his talent for playing pool, made Max Morath ragtime come alive on the piano, engaged in voluminous correspondence with his brother Dave, and generally served as a role model for anyone who might worry about being bored in retirement.

Bob is best known locally for his painting as part of the Transylvania Art Guild (serving as President) and also a member of the Art League of Henderson County. He won first place this year in the Western North Carolina State Fair art competition. On the other end of the cultural scale he and Greta frequently won or placed in local pool tournaments, which his family came to accept after he was able to demonstrate that the winnings were sufficient to cover the cost of his Hershey kisses habit.

Nothing made Bob happier than listening or playing music, from Beethoven to bluegrass, reading, or watching sports with Greta. He died suddenly and peacefully, sitting in his favorite chair having run errands in the morning and planning to play pool that evening. His family is going to miss him forever.

A memorial service will be held at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard on Saturday, March 5 at 4:00 with a reception following.
