Polar Plunge Helps Set Fundraising Record 

"Baby, it's cold outside!" Not the song, the truth. Last Saturday, Moody-Connolly's Chris Biecker donned an Elvis costume and took the plunge into the frigid waters of Lake Atagahi to support the Transylvania County Special Olympics.

Biecker, who is also the president-elect of the Rotary Club of Pisgah Forest , wasn't satisfied that his fundraising effort would be enough, so he struck a side deal to make the challenge more interesting and beneficial.

"Our community is something else," Biecker said. "We're out here in the middle of winter, raising money for our county's gifted, special athletes. We all just feel very fortunate to be able to do this and lend our support."

Joining Biecker was Rotary Club of Pisgah Forest President Nick Beardon (wearing the orange Clemson shirt) and President-Nominee Dr. John Krishinger, dressed as Batman.

Biecker believed that he and Krishinger together could raise over $1,000, but Beardon thought it was all talk.

"Nick lost the bet, which meant he had to wear a Clemson shirt for the plunge," Biecker laughed. "He's from Alabama, you know. Not exactly a Clemson fan."

Biecker was also proud to report that the 5th Annual Polar Plunge saw a five-fold increase in participants this time around versus last year. A total of $16,997 was raised, which also set a new record.

Along with Moody-Connolly Funeral Home & Crematory, numerous other local businesses and organizations provided funding or in-kind donations to help the Transylvania County Olympics with their goals.
